Georges St-Pierre Drops a Bizarre Question on Fight Day and Fans Can't Process It

Hours before UFC Edmonton, the Hall of Famer asked his followers whether a man who has sex with men is automatically gay, and offered nothing else.

Georges St-Pierre picked a strange morning to open the floor for debate. On Saturday, Oct. 17, with UFC Edmonton set for that night, the Hall of Famer posted a question to his X account that nobody had predicted: “Is a man who has sex with men automatically gay? 🤔 Let me know what you think.” The post went up at 14:52 GMT with two links attached. The text itself gave no context, no follow-up and no hint of where the thought came from.

The replies and quote posts arrived quickly. The fan account Spinnin Backfist shared it with a dry setup: “Its fight day in Canada lets see what GSP is up to.” MMA commentator Dovy, posting as @DovySimuMMA, kept it shorter: “wtf is GSP doing???” By the afternoon the post had its own thread on r/MMA, where user u/Moni7T framed it as St-Pierre trying his hand at philosophy, which is about as gentle a framing as the internet was going to offer.

Part of the confusion comes from who posted it. St-Pierre has spent his retirement as one of the sport’s most carefully managed public figures, the polite Canadian legend whose name still gets invoked whenever someone throws a clean technique. That happened this very weekend. On Friday night at Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat 37 in Sacramento, lightweight Richard White knocked out Chalmes Brown in his amateur debut with a superman punch that MMA Mania and Yahoo Sports both compared to St-Pierre’s signature strike. Elsewhere this week, a Yahoo Sports roundup carried a headline about Jon Jones comparing Gable Steveson’s 12-second knockout loss to St-Pierre’s upset against Matt Serra, and Bloody Elbow listed him alongside Ronda Rousey and Michael Bisping as fighters who went on to big Hollywood roles. Usually his name trends for reasons like those.

The timing also landed on a card built around Canadian fans. UFC Edmonton is headlined by Joaquin Buckley against Ontario’s Mike Malott, and the buildup has been mostly about who sells tickets north of the border. Buckley called Malott unknown at media day, and Malott answered him directly, telling Full Send MMA, “He would never headline in Canada without me.” MMA Mania’s preview listed St-Pierre among the names that once made Canadian cards feel like national events, which made a bizarre post from him on Canadian fight day an easy target for jokes.

The two links are the missing piece, and nothing public so far explains them. St-Pierre has not added context in the post, and the sources don’t show any clarification from him or his team. Until he does, people will fill the gap with their own guesses, and most of what’s out there is mockery.

My take: St-Pierre built a career on preparation. He studied opponents the way grad students study texts, and he rarely did anything in public without a reason behind it. A question this loaded, dropped with an emoji and two unexplained links on a day his country had a UFC main event, doesn’t read like the GSP fans know. He gets one more sentence from me before I decide what this was. The Malott and Buckley fight goes off tonight in Edmonton, and that card deserves the attention more than his post does.
