Francisco Prado stopped Ismael Bonfim with punches late in the first round at UFC Vegas 122 on Saturday, a day after Bonfim blew the lightweight limit by 7.5 pounds.
Sherdog had the finish as a TKO at 4:23 of Round 1. MMA Junkie logged it as a KO at 4:32. Both agree it ended with Bonfim eating punches and Prado getting his hand raised before the horn.
The weight story started Friday. Nolan King reported that Bonfim stepped on the scale at 163.5 pounds, a 7.5-pound miss for a lightweight bout. MMA Junkie called it a “GIANT WEIGHT MISS ALERT” and listed the bout status as TBD. Not long after, King posted that it was “Sounding like the bout will proceed,” and it did.

Then came the part that got everybody talking. MMA Mania reported that Prado showed up his opponent by gaining a staggering 35 pounds in 24 hours. If the guy across from you is going to walk in heavy, apparently the move is to walk in heavier.
The fight
The extra weight on Bonfim’s side of the ledger didn’t buy him much. Aaron Bronsteter summed it up in two words on X: “Ragdolled Bonfim.” Bronsteter also noted it was a big win for Prado in his return to lightweight, which is where this result matters most for him.

The UFC’s own account went with “ALWAYS DOWN TO SCRAP” and said Prado “made a STATEMENT” with the first-round finish. The fight streamed on Paramount+, which Dana White plugged on X right before the walkouts.
The stakes
Renato Moicano framed the matchup bluntly on X the night before. Writing in Portuguese, he said both men were coming off four losses in their last five fights, that Bonfim had missed by roughly eight pounds, and that even the winner’s odds of keeping a roster spot were low. He said whoever won would need a miracle to stay in the game, and predicted a war.
For Prado, the result snaps the skid and gives him something to show the matchmakers after a rough stretch. For Bonfim, a heavy weight miss followed by a first-round stoppage is about the worst Friday-Saturday combination a fighter on a losing run can put together. No word yet from the UFC on what comes next for either man.

My take: the 35-pound regain is a great bit, and Prado earned the right to do it by actually getting the finish. Missing by 7.5 pounds is a choice made weeks before fight night, and it cost Bonfim a chunk of his purse and probably more. Prado took the fight anyway, took the weight disadvantage off the table with a cheeseburger plan, and made it end before the first horn. That’s the right way to answer a weight miss. Whether Moicano’s warning about job security applies to the winner too is a question the UFC will answer when it sends Prado his next bout agreement.
