Eddie Hearn Says Floyd Mayweather vs. Ryan Garcia Is Happening and Backs the 50-0 Legend

Garcia says the fight is real, contested at 147 pounds, and for the WBC welterweight title.

Eddie Hearn says Floyd Mayweather vs. Ryan Garcia is happening. The Matchroom Boxing boss also has a pick, and it isn’t the younger man. In a video interview with BoxingNewsED, shared Thursday by Spinnin Backfist on X, Hearn said the fight is on and that he thinks Mayweather beats Garcia.

That’s a strange pair of sentences to read about a man whose last professional fight was nine years ago. Hearn doesn’t promote either fighter. He’s still choosing the guy who never lost.

Garcia got there first. A day earlier, Championship Rounds on X shared a clip in which Garcia put real stakes on it: “It’s real and he wants to do a real fight at 147. This fight will be for the 147 WBC world championship, I made that very clear. Floyd and I agreed to fight.”

That detail matters. Garcia is describing a sanctioned title fight at welterweight, which is a long way from a novelty night with headgear. Neither Mayweather nor any sanctioning body has confirmed that framing in the sources available, and no date or venue has surfaced.

Where Both Men Are Coming From

Mayweather’s last pro bout was the 2017 crossover with Conor McGregor, which he won by TKO in Round 10 to close his career at 50-0. He’s been talking a lot lately. On the PBD Podcast this week he accused McGregor of taking “my whole swag” to the UFC and floated a second fight with the Irishman, saying “I think me and Conor McGregor may lock up again.” So Floyd is apparently juggling at least two dance partners at once, which is very Floyd.

Garcia’s most recent outing was a demolition. He destroyed Conor Benn in September, and Benn was one of the headline signings for Zuffa Boxing, the Dana White-run promotion Hearn has been feuding with for most of 2026. Hearn hasn’t let anyone forget it. Talking to iFL TV earlier this week about Shakur Stevenson leaving Zuffa without ever fighting for the company, Hearn brought up Benn too: “Then you sign Conor Benn, get him smashed to pieces.”

That’s the backdrop. Garcia is coming off the best night of his recent career, Mayweather is a legend who hasn’t laced up for a pro fight since the McGregor spectacle, and the most talkative promoter in boxing is telling everyone the matchup is real while betting against the fighter with momentum.

My Take

I’d love to know what Hearn saw that I’m missing. Garcia just took Benn apart, and if this really goes ahead at 147 for a WBC belt, Mayweather is stepping into a sanctioned fight after nine years away from real competition. Picking Floyd on reputation is easy. Picking him against a guy who just smashed a welterweight is a bolder call, and Hearn made it without a dollar of his own on the line. Until Mayweather says the words “WBC” and “147” himself, I’m treating Garcia’s version as the only detailed one on the table. The first thing I want is a date.
