Dillon Danis Wore One Shirt and Got Exactly What He Wanted From Arman Tsarukyan

Tsarukyan's punch appeared to land on a security guard instead of Danis, a day after he said the UFC promised him a lightweight title fight early next year.

Dillon Danis is 0-2 on the Real American Freestyle mats, and he has never once needed a win to get what he came for. At Thursday’s RAF 14 press conference in Las Vegas, a media member asked about his shirt, and Danis stood up to show it off. “It says Khamzat is my bitch, and it has a picture of him without a beard,” Danis said, per MMA Mania. Arman Tsarukyan, the UFC’s No. 2 lightweight and a close friend and training partner of Khamzat Chimaev, left his chair and went straight across the stage.

RAF owners Izzy Martinez and Chad Bronstein were seated nearby and tried to hold him back. Bloody Elbow reported that Tsarukyan pushed both of them off before throwing. MMA Mania reported the punch missed Danis and appeared to clobber a security guard, and Ariel Helwani posted on X that one security guard was bleeding. Then both camps hit the stage. Chimaev, who wrestles Robbie Lawler in Friday’s co-main event, was restrained by about four people according to MMA Mania, and fan footage showed Brendan Allen trying to calm him down while Albert Duraev was also held back. The presser ended there. Every other pairing on the card faced off. Tsarukyan and Danis did not.

Why the Shirt Worked

The shirt points back to RAF 10 in June. Bloody Elbow reported that Danis went for a guillotine, Chimaev pinned him, and MMA Mania clocked the whole thing at 44 seconds. The match ended in a brawl between the two teams, though outlets disagree on who threw the post-match kick. So Danis is wearing a boast about a match he lost in under a minute. MMA Mania noted the shirt doesn’t make much sense. It didn’t have to make sense. It had to work.

Look at the two résumés of bad behavior and the setup writes itself. Danis was in the UFC 229 melee and, per MMA Mania, earned a lifetime ban from UFC events after brawling with Islam Makhachev’s teammates at UFC 322. Tsarukyan punched a fan during his UFC 300 walkout and took a $25,000 fine and a nine-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He headbutted Dan Hooker in a faceoff and broke his nose. He tackled and punched Georgio Poullas after the whistle at RAF 6.

The barbs before the shirt matter too. MMA Weekly reported Danis accused Tsarukyan of pulling out of their canceled Hype grappling match, claiming the UFC was scared of its star getting hurt. Tsarukyan shot back that Danis was the worst fighter in MMA history and only credited him as a good grappler. My read is that Danis tested a couple of buttons, got a verbal answer, then went for the one that wasn’t about Tsarukyan at all. Insulting a man’s friend leaves him no clean way to shrug it off on camera.

How the Match Plays Out

Danis can actually grapple, and I’ll defend that to anyone. He got his black belt at 21, holds an 18-16 grappling record with 11 submission wins, and has been submitted only once in 16 losses. He hit an inside heel hook on Jackson Sousa at Polaris 4, a D’arce on Joe Lauzon at Metamoris 6 and a toe hold in his Bellator debut. I love a good leg lock entry as much as anyone alive. None of that has shown up on an RAF scoreboard.

The RAF 10 sequence is the tell. Danis reached for a guillotine against a wrestler driving into him and ended up pinned. My read is that the front headlock is his most dangerous look against Tsarukyan’s shots, and also the position most likely to leave his shoulders exposed when the choke isn’t there. A guillotine that doesn’t finish is just a man falling backward with a wrestler on top of him.

Tsarukyan is a Master of Sports in freestyle wrestling and is 2-0 against Poullas in RAF. The first one, at RAF 6, was ugly: he won on points in a match full of mutual foul accusations, then swung after the whistle. The rematch at RAF 7 was cleaner, a 9-3 win, though Ben Askren had promised tighter security for that one. That second match is the more useful data point. When Tsarukyan keeps his head, he grinds out scoring exchanges at a pace few people handle. His 2019 UFC debut against Makhachev was a high-paced fight built on constant wrestling exchanges, and that was seven years ago.

My pick is Tsarukyan, comfortably, on points or by pin inside the opening stretch. The only version of Friday where Danis wins anything is the one where the contest becomes about composure instead of position. He’s undefeated in that event.

What It Means for Lightweight

The timing is brutal. Tsarukyan said Thursday he’d been told he’s fighting for the title next, early in 2027. In a clip Championship Rounds credited to Helwani, he said the UFC gave him February or March with two possible opponents, Justin Gaethje or another name if Gaethje retires, and that he expects Gaethje to retire. He’s coming off a knockout of Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 in September.

He also has a promoter with a long memory. MMA Mania reported Dana White was “not thrilled” after the earlier incidents and Tsarukyan’s withdrawal from his UFC 311 title fight against Makhachev one day before the event, and that White confirmed the behavior played a role in delaying another title shot. So on the same day he announced a promised title fight, Tsarukyan swung at a man banned from UFC events and appears to have hit security. That’s a rough Thursday for a guy who already lost one title shot to this exact habit.

Nobody involved sounds like they’re cooling off. Chimaev told Red Corner MMA, “I’m gonna be close there [on Friday night]. If something happens, we’re ready.” Lawler, who sat through the whole thing stone-faced, told MMA Fighting, “I just think we need to do a better job as competitors.”

The inaugural RAF Middleweight Crossover title goes up Friday, October 23, at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. I expect Tsarukyan to win the match. What I’m watching is the five seconds after the final whistle, because that’s where his title shot actually gets decided.
