David Benavidez Finally Stops Chasing Canelo as His Own Star Takes Off

The WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion has a Dec. 5 unification fight against Michal Cieslak in Glendale and a possible Jai Opetaia showdown penciled in for May 2027.

David Benavidez is done waiting on Canelo Alvarez. MMA Junkie reported Friday that Benavidez has given up on landing the Canelo fight, and the framing tells you why: his boxing stock is rising fast enough that he doesn’t need the Mexican superstar to validate him anymore.

That’s a big shift for a guy whose name has been stapled to Canelo’s in fight-fan arguments for years. Now Benavidez is pointing his career somewhere else entirely, and his schedule backs that up.

Where Benavidez stands right now

Benavidez moved up and took over at cruiserweight. In May 2026 he stopped Gilberto Ramirez to win the WBA and WBO titles at 200 pounds, per Combat Press. Next up is a unification fight against Michal Cieslak on Dec. 5 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. MiddleEasy reported that PBC confirmed the card will stream on DAZN and Prime Video pay-per-view, with Ortiz vs. Thurman also on the bill.

Then there’s the fight that could really move the needle. Combat Press reported that a cruiserweight unification between Benavidez and Jai Opetaia has been tentatively targeted for May 2027. Opetaia is 31-0 with 24 knockouts and still holds The Ring cruiserweight belt after the IBF stripped him of its title. The complication is that Opetaia keeps getting linked to heavyweight. Zuffa Boxing’s Dana White said in October that Opetaia was more than likely to appear on the Fury vs. Joshua card in Cardiff on Dec. 11, with Deontay Wilder the opponent under discussion. Opetaia’s stated 2027 plan is still at cruiserweight, though, so the Benavidez fight is alive.

Meanwhile, in Canelo’s world

Canelo has his own problems. He has an upcoming fight in Riyadh, and journalist Alan Dawson questioned on The Uncrowned Beat, as shared by Ariel Helwani on X, whether it can still go ahead amid safety concerns. Dawson pointed to a Houthi spokesperson’s threats and U.S. government warnings to avoid crowds.

“The venue for the Canelo fight is supposed to hold up to 30,000 people, I believe,” Dawson said.

And Canelo’s name keeps popping up on other people’s wish lists. Jake Paul recently put Canelo on a hit list alongside Francis Ngannou and Conor McGregor, according to MMA Mania, while MVP CEO Nakisa Bidarian said the company is negotiating with four potential opponents for Paul’s return in late 2026 or early 2027.

Quick take

Good. Honestly, about time. Benavidez spent years as the guy everybody said Canelo should fight, and the fight never came together. That’s a lousy way to build a career, standing outside a door waiting for somebody else to open it. Now he’s holding two belts in a new division, he’s headlining a PPV in Arizona, and the most interesting opponent on his calendar is an undefeated Australian with 24 knockouts. Canelo vs. Benavidez would’ve been a monster fight. Benavidez vs. Opetaia might be a better one, because both guys actually want it. He has to get past Cieslak on Dec. 5 first, and if he looks scary doing it, the phone call from Canelo’s camp can go to voicemail.
