Dana White's 19-Second DWCS Phenom Draws a TUF Champ Who Hasn't Lost in the UFC

Akbar Abdullaev reportedly debuts against Mairon Santos on December 5 in Riyadh, at lightweight, on the Israel Adesanya vs. Shara Magomedov card.

Akbar Abdullaev, the unbeaten knockout artist who left Dana White gushing after a 19-second finish on the Contender Series, reportedly has his first UFC opponent. Ag.Fight first reported that Abdullaev will face Mairon Santos on December 5 at UFC Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, and BJPenn.com followed with the details.

The fight lands at 155 pounds. A post on r/MMA described the booking as short notice and pegged it at lightweight. BJPenn.com reported that Santos is making a permanent move up after he missed the featherweight limit ahead of his last outing.

Abdullaev’s Contender Series night was over almost before the crowd settled into their seats. One punch, 19 seconds, contract secured. White responded by putting him among the greatest talents the Contender Series has ever produced, which is heavy praise from a man who has handed out dozens of contracts from that cage. Abdullaev came over as a former ONE Championship standout. BJPenn.com reported that since signing he has been itching to fight one of the division’s top contenders.

The UFC did not hand him a soft landing.

Santos is a perfect 4-0 inside the Octagon. He won The Ultimate Fighter 32 featherweight tournament by knocking out Kaan Ofli in August 2024, then beat Sodiq Yusuff and Francis Marshall. Last year he took a unanimous decision over Muhammad Naimov, a fight he made after coming in heavy on the scale. That miss is the reason he’s heading up a division for good, and Riyadh will be his first official look as a lightweight.

The rest of the card

Israel Adesanya headlines UFC Saudi Arabia against Shara “Bullet” Magomedov at middleweight. Islam Dulatov and Hecher Sosa are also returning on the card, so the prelims and middle of the lineup are loaded with fighters the matchmakers clearly want people watching.

Quick take

I love this booking, and I’m a little nervous for Abdullaev, which is exactly how a good debut should feel. Contender Series winners usually get a name to beat. Abdullaev gets a TUF champion who has never lost in the UFC, who has seen 15-minute fights, and who knows exactly what 25 extra pounds of pressure feels like on a cut. The short notice cuts both ways. Santos gets to stop starving himself to make 145, and Abdullaev has less time to study film of a guy who has actually been tested by Yusuff. If Abdullaev’s power holds up against someone who can take a shot and keep coming, White’s praise starts looking like a forecast. If Santos drags him into the third round, we’ll find out what’s under the highlight reel. Either way, I’ll be watching on December 5 well before the Adesanya walkout.
