Conor McGregor Grabbed His Face as a Bare-Knuckle Fighter's Leg Gave Out in Rome

Sitting ringside at Hype Fighting for his first public appearance since UFC 329, McGregor watched Francesco Morandi go down screaming in Round 1.

Conor McGregor came to Rome to watch fights on Tuesday, and he ended up looking like a man watching his own worst night on replay. A ringside camera at Hype Fighting’s event at the PalaPellicone caught him with both hands pressed to his face the instant Francesco Morandi’s leg went wrong in Round 1 of his bare-knuckle boxing bout with Ali Heibati.

Morandi and Heibati had been throwing hard from the opening bell, a real brawl, the kind of undercard fight that wakes up a building. Then Morandi went down screaming with an apparent leg injury, and the fight was over. The sources don’t give any update on his condition yet.

Commentator Robin Black saw McGregor’s reaction and said it out loud on the broadcast. “He just went through this himself not long ago, blowing out his knee early in a fight,” Black said. “He can 100 percent relate to this. That man just experienced that.” He followed it with the line that’s now riding along with the clip everywhere: “That’s the face of a man who is reliving an experience.” The account Happy Punch posted the footage on X on Nov. 3, and Bloody Elbow ran the story the next day.

Why it hit McGregor so hard

This was McGregor’s first public appearance since UFC 329, and the history explains the hands on the face. In July 2021 he broke his leg in the trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, an injury that kept him out of the Octagon for years. His long-awaited return came against Max Holloway, and it lasted 69 seconds before another serious setback ended it. McGregor later announced he needed surgery on the damaged knee. He’s 38, he hasn’t fought since that loss, and nobody has put a timeline on when he’ll be cleared.

The same card had its own shock at the top. Colby Covington, in the main event, got submitted by Raul Rosas Jr. in 43 seconds. McGregor ended up in that story too. Bloody Elbow reported he denied laughing at Covington’s loss after what its headline called a “false” video went viral.

Quick take

I feel for Morandi first. He was in a good, ugly, honest fight until his body betrayed him. The McGregor shot is going to get shared ten times more than the bout itself, and I understand why. You don’t fake that reaction. Black nailed the read in real time, too, which is what good commentary is supposed to do. The important follow-up belongs to Morandi, and the next medical update on his leg matters a lot more than any clip of the famous guy at cageside.
