Christian Lee Risks His Lightweight Gold Against 2-0 Grappling Ace Tye Ruotolo

Lee returns after a year out to headline The Inner Circle 37 at Lumpinee, on the same Friday as a ONE Friday Fights 177 card topped by IsanNua Chotbangsaen and Jack Apichat Muaythai.

Christian Lee Risks His Lightweight Gold Against 2-0 Grappling Ace Tye Ruotolo

ONE Championship packed two shows into one Friday at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok on November 6. The Inner Circle 37 put Christian Lee’s lightweight MMA title on the line against Tye Ruotolo, and the ONE Friday Fights 177 main card, led by a Muay Thai bout between IsanNua Chotbangsaen and Jack Apichat Muaythai, streamed on ONE’s YouTube channel. Cageside Press set the opening bell at 7:30AM ET (4:30AM PT). The r/MMA event thread listed 6:30AM ET and warned that its order and start times might be off. Results for every bout have not yet appeared in the reporting available here, so this covers the card as it was billed.

Lee is the reason the morning matters. He holds ONE’s lightweight belt and won welterweight gold before that, which makes him a two-division champion. Cageside Press noted he had been out of action for a year before this defense. The r/MMA thread listed the fight at 170 pounds even though it was billed for the lightweight championship. Fans watching from the West had to find it on the ONE Championship website, because Cageside said Inner Circle fights stream there and the main card goes to YouTube.

Ruotolo is 23 and only 2-0 in MMA. His case for the shot comes from the mats. He is a ONE grappling champion and an IBJJF World champion, and against most lightweights that pedigree would decide where the fight takes place. Lee has spent years beating people who wanted to wrestle him.

The rest of The Inner Circle was Muay Thai. Komawut FA Group met Yodphupa Petkiatpet, Kongchai Chanaidonmueang took on Tantawy Ahmed, Titus Proctor faced Maciej Karpinski, and Cal Cook drew Dabdam Por Tor Tor Thongtawee.

The Friday Fights 177 card mixed Muay Thai, kickboxing and one MMA bout, and the fighters’ names differ from source to source. Cageside billed the headliner as Isannuea Sor Sasiwat vs. Jack Siatanyokkrok PK. Below that, Saksri Superlek Muaythai fought Superball Sitcho, Chatpet NP Suablackmuaythai faced Saipetlek Rongsamak Orborjor Udon Thani, Petdam BS Muaythai met Chaisongkram Looksuan, and Klinphaka Por Thaisong took on Ran Longshu. Kickboxing filled out the bottom: Phun Suea Muang vs. Kazuteru Yamazaki, Okazaki Silkmuaythai vs. Yuto, and Marat Jankovskij vs. Retsu Sashida. Chayut Rojanakat, listed as Bos Chayut by Cageside, faced Kentaro Okumura in the lone MMA fight at 145 pounds.

The Reddit thread also flagged some changes. It listed Petdam SitErawan vs. Chaisongkhram Looksuan and Marats Jankovskis vs. Retsu Sashida as cancelled, while near-identical pairings stayed on the main card. That looks more like a naming mix-up than two scratched fights, but confirm on the official results before you trust any bracket. It also showed the Okazaki (Oga Silk MuayThai) vs. Yuto (Yuhi) bout moving from 115 pounds to a weight to be announced.

My take: I usually distrust title shots handed to anyone with two pro fights, and 2-0 is a thinner résumé than most hype trains ride on. Ruotolo’s case is different because the credentials behind it are real. An IBJJF World title and ONE grappling gold took a decade of work, and they weren’t built on a couple of highlight-reel wins. The fair worry is the year Lee spent away, because rust is the one thing a grappler this good can punish. If Lee keeps his feet under him and his hands busy, his experience should carry the night. If Ruotolo gets him down, the belt is in real danger.
