Brendan Allen Hits the Scale With a Four-Fight Streak on the Line at UFC Vegas 122

Allen (27-7) and Christian Leroy Duncan (15-2) each need to hit 186 pounds Friday at the Meta APEX to lock in a five-round middleweight main event.

The UFC Vegas 122 fighters stepped up to the scale Friday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, with official weigh-ins opening at 12 p.m. ET and all 24 fighters on Saturday’s card due to make their bouts official. The UFC streamed the session live and posted an official results page. At press time, though, the live trackers from MMA Fighting, MMA Mania and MMA Weekly still showed blank weight fields. So the numbers for headliners Brendan Allen and Christian Leroy Duncan weren’t in hand yet.

Here’s what both men are aiming for. This is a non-title middleweight fight, so the Nevada State Athletic Commission gives them the standard one-pound allowance. That puts the ceiling at 186 pounds. Co-main eventers Matheus Camilo and Jai Herbert work under the same rule at lightweight, which means 156 pounds. Staredowns were set for roughly 2 p.m. ET, once the scale was done.

The main event is scheduled for five rounds, and it’s a good one on paper. MMA Weekly lists Allen at 27-7. He’s won three straight and, per the UFC, he’s chasing a fourth in a row. The rankings depend on who you ask. MMA Mania has Allen at No. 6 in the UFC’s middleweight rankings, MMA Weekly has him at No. 5, and MMA Fighting’s Global Rankings also put him at No. 6. Duncan (15-2) comes in at No. 10 in the UFC rankings. MMA Fighting has him at No. 11 after his most recent result, a win over former title challenger Jared Cannonier that made it five straight. MMA Mania called Duncan a relative newcomer, which is a polite way of saying the ranked guy across the cage has seen more five-round main events than he has.

The rest of the main card, which starts at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount+:

  • Camilo vs. Herbert at 155 pounds
  • Loopy Godinez vs. Ketlen Souza at strawweight (115)
  • Andre Fili vs. Kai Kamaka III at 145, a matchup MMA Mania is billing as a guaranteed slugfest
  • Malcolm Wellmaker vs. Otari Tanzilovi at 135

The prelims open at 5 p.m. ET:

  • Julius Walker vs. Gerald Meerschaert at 205
  • Francisco Prado vs. Ismael Bonfim at lightweight
  • Niko Price vs. Leon Shahbazyan at 170
  • Felipe Franco vs. Brendson Ribeiro at light heavyweight
  • Allen Frye Jr. vs. RJ Harris at heavyweight
  • Alice Pereira vs. Darya Zheleznyakova at 135
  • Ernesta Kareckaite vs. Melissa Gatto at 125

My take: weigh-in day matters most in fights like this one. A five-round middleweight main event is 25 minutes, and a fighter who’s drained on Friday can carry that into the championship rounds. Duncan’s streak is real, and beating Cannonier is a legitimate résumé line. Still, Allen has 34 pro fights to Duncan’s 17. If both men hit 186 cleanly, I like Allen to make the deep-water rounds his territory and win a decision. The scale won’t decide it, but it’ll tell us whether anybody walks in Saturday night already behind.
