Brady Injury Hands Johnny Walker a Five-Round Heavyweight Test at UFC Vegas 124

Waldo Cortes-Acosta is a -230 favorite at FanDuel in the replacement headliner, with prelims starting at 5 p.m. ET on Paramount+.

UFC Vegas 124 goes tonight (Saturday, Nov. 7) at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas. No. 6 heavyweight Waldo Cortes-Acosta meets No. 12 Johnny Walker in a five-round main event. The whole card streams on Paramount+, with prelims at 5 p.m. ET and the main card at 8 p.m. ET, according to MMA Mania. The UFC says 14 fights are set, and UFC Brasil posted on X that 11 Brazilians will compete.

This wasn’t the original headliner. Sean Brady was booked against Gabriel Bonfim until an injury pulled Brady out, and the promotion scrambled to slot in the heavyweight fight. Two other bouts also changed. Lucas Brennan tore his ACL, so UFC newcomer Carlos Calderon now faces Austin Bashi at featherweight. Wesley Schultz withdrew, and Andre Petroski steps in against Mantas Kondratavicius at middleweight.

Cortes-Acosta opened his UFC run 7-1, with five straight wins before Sergei Pavlovich beat him over 15 minutes in 2025. “Salsa Boy” answered with three knockouts, two in the first round, then dropped unanimous decisions to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes. The Blaydes loss came on Sept. 12 in Glendale, Ariz. That’s the first two-fight skid of his career, and MMA Mania notes a third straight loss would push him out of the Top 10.

Walker is a month and change removed from his heavyweight debut, a first-round knee that flattened Mick Parkin at UFC 332. The Brazilian never won the belt at 205 pounds despite being viewed as a real threat there, and he took plenty of ugly knockout losses along the way. MMA Mania’s preview wondered whether skipping the brutal weight cut has bought him a sturdier chin. The same piece pointed out he has two knockouts in his last three fights.

At FanDuel, Cortes-Acosta is -230 and Walker is +180. By method, Cortes-Acosta by KO/TKO is -110 and by decision is +475. Walker is +350 by knockout and +1000 on the cards. Both MMA Mania and MMA KO picked Cortes-Acosta, the latter arguing he’s a far more credentialed opponent than Parkin.

The co-main is a strawweight fight between former title challengers. Tatiana Suarez lost to Zhang Weili at UFC 312 and has won two straight since. Virna Jandiroba fell to Mackenzie Dern at UFC 321, then beat Tabatha Ricci. Suarez owns the wrestling edge on paper, but Jandiroba has 14 career submission wins, so Suarez can’t treat the mat as a safe place to rest.

Other fights worth your attention: 40-year-old Davey Grant faces Elijah Smith, who has won eight straight. Murtazali Magomedov puts his 11-0 record (all stoppages) on the line against Jose Delano, who has won five in a row. Petroski arrives on a three-fight losing streak, with the last two by knockout.

My take: the -230 looks tidy until you remember how Cortes-Acosta’s last two fights went. MMA Mania’s own breakdown says Volkov beat him by staying long and kicking the lead leg and body, and Walker is a longer kicker with more pop than most of the division. I don’t trust one knee against Parkin as proof Walker’s chin got fixed at heavyweight. But a 25-minute fight gives a +180 dog plenty of time to land something weird, and Walker lives on weird. I’m taking a small piece of Walker at +180 and keeping the ticket handy, because if Cortes-Acosta’s right hand lands in Round 2, you’ll be reading about it here Monday.
