Arman Tsarukyan Refuses to Sit Idle Waiting on Gaethje, Books a Gracie on the Mats

The UFC's No. 1 lightweight contender will wrestle Neiman Gracie at RAF Abu Dhabi on Nov. 14 while the 155-pound title waits on Justin Gaethje's decision.

Arman Tsarukyan has found something to do while the lightweight belt sits in limbo. The top contender at 155 pounds is booked to wrestle Neiman Gracie at RAF Abu Dhabi on Nov. 14, according to the fight announcements in MMA Fighting’s Morning Report. BJJDOC reported the matchup under a headline billing Gracie as a Gracie family welterweight champion. That framing tells you how this one will be sold: a lightweight contender with a title shot in his future against a last name every grappling fan knows, competing under wrestling rules.

The Abu Dhabi card has more of that flavor. Kennedy Blades and Bella Mir are also booked for a wrestling match on the same Nov. 14 lineup.

Why Tsarukyan has the time

The answer runs through Justin Gaethje. “The Highlight” won the interim lightweight title with a decision over Paddy Pimblett. Five months later, on June 14, he beat Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House to become undisputed champion. Topuria never made it to the fifth round. After the fourth, his brother Aleksandre told referee Marc Goddard they were done, and it went down as the first loss of Topuria’s career. Footage the UFC released this month without commentary shows Topuria telling his corner after the third round that he could “barely see anything.”

Since then Gaethje hasn’t decided whether he’ll defend the title or retire, and Bloody Elbow reported he has brushed off talk of rematches with both Pimblett and Topuria. If he comes back in 2027, Tsarukyan is expected to be the man across from him. MMA Fighting also lists Tsarukyan as the No. 1 contender and the likely challenger should Gaethje return.

The rest of the division keeps moving around him. Topuria is training again, with a comeback that likely won’t happen until 2027. Jorge Masvidal is publicly pushing for Topuria against Pimblett, telling Full Mount MMA, “This is the biggest fight you can make.” Bloody Elbow also ran a piece on Usman Nurmagomedov’s view of why the UFC hasn’t booked Topuria against Tsarukyan. So the No. 1 contender is waiting on a champion’s retirement call while the promotion’s biggest names are busy talking about each other.

Quick take

This is the right move, and I’d like to see more contenders make it. Tsarukyan could have spent the winter refreshing his phone for news out of Gaethje’s camp. He chose a live opponent and a real deadline instead, which keeps him in competition shape and keeps his name in the conversation during a stretch when Topuria and Pimblett are grabbing most of the headlines. Wrestling rules also mean no punches and no submissions, so the injury risk sits lower than any fight he could take in the Octagon right now. The one risk is the optics. Losing to a welterweight Gracie on the mats would hand Tsarukyan’s critics something to post for months, and he knows it. He took the booking anyway. Nov. 14, Abu Dhabi.
