Amateur MMA Champ Pulls a Live Gator Out of an Elementary School With His Bare Hands

Mike Dragich, the 37-year-old 'Blue Collar Brawler,' grabbed a juvenile alligator wedged near a Jacksonville-area school's HVAC units, and the gator did not go quietly.

Mike Dragich, the Florida amateur MMA fighter who goes by the Blue Collar Brawler, got called to a Jacksonville-area elementary school this week after a juvenile alligator got itself trapped near the building’s HVAC units. He handled it the way he handles most things. He walked up and grabbed it with his bare hands.

Essentially Sports reported that the young gator fought back while the 37-year-old worked to subdue it, and BroBible and NDTV Sports also picked up the story. Small gator, sure. Florida grows them a lot bigger. But juveniles can be aggressive and slippery, and a routine removal can turn into a scramble fast. Dragich got control, and the animal was removed from the school grounds.

This is familiar work for him. Dragich posts his captures on Instagram, where his account is closing in on 500,000 followers, and the clips mix bare-hand grabs with standard wrangling gear. According to Essentially Sports, his résumé includes a 10-foot alligator near a different local elementary school in June 2023, a six-footer he corralled with a plastic trash can, and an eight-footer he reportedly took with his bare hands in Jacksonville in April 2024. In another recent video he dealt with a much larger gator pinned against a fence in a downtown Jacksonville neighborhood, and for that one he went with conventional equipment. Good call.

For perspective on how this goes for cage fighters without the reps, Arman Tsarukyan considered trying a rear-naked choke on a live alligator earlier this year, and the reporting suggests the idea was more ambitious than the execution.

The fight record

Dragich is a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran and a former martial arts instructor trainer. His amateur MMA run went like this: back-to-back losses between late 2021 and early 2022, then a decision win over Richarde’ Anderson, then a first-round TKO of Jaguar West at Premier Fight League 35 in December 2022 to win the amateur middleweight title. That leaves him 2-2 as an amateur.

He hasn’t had an official MMA fight since. A bout scheduled for 2023 was canceled. He did take a split-decision win over Billy Graves in a bare-knuckle boxing match at LeLeo Code MMA, but he still hasn’t made his pro MMA debut, and the sources don’t mention anything booked.

Here’s my read. A 37-year-old 2-2 amateur who hasn’t fought in an MMA cage since December 2022 is the exact profile I tell people to stay away from at short odds, because long layoffs are where money goes to die. That said, nobody’s pricing him against a person. Against juvenile reptiles near school ventilation equipment, his record is clean as far as anyone has filmed, and I’d lay chalk on him in that matchup all day. If he ever does sign a pro debut, the grappling control in these videos is the one thing I’d actually want to see translate, and the only stat I’d care about is whether he’s been in a real camp first.
