Alexander Volkanovski Pitches Justin Gaethje a Title Fight With a Retirement Twist

Volkanovski wants Gaethje's lightweight belt on the line in a champ-vs-champ superfight, after which both men would walk away and leave the division to sort itself out.

A championship belt on the canvas of an empty octagon between two pairs of fight gloves

Alexander Volkanovski has a plan for the lightweight title, and it ends with two retirements. Speaking on the Who The Fook Is That Guy podcast, Volkanovski pitched a superfight against Justin Gaethje with the lightweight belt at stake, followed by both men hanging up the gloves.

“Let’s do a superfight, lightweight title on the line and then we can both [retire]. Then, straight after that, let the division sort themselves out. Let’s make that happen,” Volkanovski said, in a clip shared by Championship Rounds on X.

MMA Junkie described the idea as a double retirement champ-vs-champ superfight and noted that Volkanovski floated it after UFC 333. He has always been willing to look past featherweight, and this pitch puts lightweight squarely in his sights again.

Where Gaethje stands

Gaethje is coming off a win over Ilia Topuria, and the fallout from that result is still making the rounds. Paddy Pimblett told All Out Fighting he thinks Topuria will never be the same after that loss, which is a heavy verdict to hang on a former champion. Gaethje has his own long-term question to answer. Charles Oliveira said Gaethje won’t be getting paid White House money again and needs to make a decision on retirement, according to an MMA Fighting report.

That makes the timing of Volkanovski’s offer pretty sharp. If Gaethje is already weighing how much longer he wants to do this, a high-profile title fight against a decorated featherweight is a cleaner exit than a contender who’s younger, hungrier and has nothing to lose. Volkanovski framed the whole thing as a shared send-off, and he made clear in his pitch that the rest of the division can wait until the two of them are done.

No fight has been offered or booked. The UFC hasn’t commented on the idea in any of the reporting so far, and Gaethje hadn’t publicly responded to the pitch as of Friday.

Quick take

The best part of this pitch is the honesty. Volkanovski didn’t dress it up as a legacy quest or a fight for the people. He basically said the two of them have earned one more big night, so let’s take it and get out of the way. I respect that more than another round of vague “anything’s possible” posting. Stylistically it’s a fun puzzle, too. Gaethje wants to drag every exchange into a phone booth and make you pay for each step back, while Volkanovski at his best is the guy who adjusts between rounds and has you solved by the third. The lightweight contenders stuck in line won’t love being told to sort themselves out afterward, and they’d have a point. But a belt fight between two veterans who both have an eye on the exit is easier to sell than most title fights on paper. If Gaethje says yes, the UFC will have a hard time finding a reason to say no.
